Counsel Of The Enemy - Verse of the Day : Now when Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled a donkey, and arose and went home to his house, to his city. Then he put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died; and he was buried in his father's tomb.
-2 Samuel 17:23

Counsel Of Ahithophel

Some of David's worst enemies were not foreigners but those from his own household. Ahithophel was David's personal advisor and confidant. Some scholars even postulate that he may have been Bathsheba's grandfather, making him an in-law of David.

He was the wisest military strategist in the land but by 2 Samuel 15, he had defected to Absalom's camp to plot a coup against David.

David did three important things to overturn the counsel of Ahithophel and they provide vital lessons for your fight against the wiles of Satan.

Firstly, in every spiritual war, you must pray. David prayed that God would turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness (15:31). Remember Jesus says that "the gates of Hades shall not prevail against" the church (Matt. 16:18)?

The city gate was the place where elders gave counsel. This means that the demonic schemes of the wicked will never prevail against the people of God. When you pray, you must come against the evil plots of the enemy.

Secondly, in a spiritual war, you must move into spiritual intelligence. David had his own secret services through Zadok, the high priest Abiathar and his two sons. They would bring secret information about the city and messages from God to David.

In the new covenant, your secret service is the Holy Spirit. He will give you special "intelligence briefings" through words of wisdom, knowledge and prophecy. The more you learn to move by the leading of the Holy Spirit, the more you will win in your fight against your enemy.

Thirdly, in a spiritual war, you must always have hope. When you become hopeless, the fight is over. David was very positive and full of faith. He always believed that in the end, God would turn everything around for his good (2 Sam. 16:12,14).

David kept on trusting in the Lord. A more modern word for "hope" is "vision and dream." Hold on to your vision and dream. If it is birthed by the Holy Spirit, it will surely come to pass.

Miraculously, Ahithophel's advice was rejected by Absalom through a working of the Lord (17:14). Disgraced, Ahithophel returned home to Giloh, put his house in order, and hanged himself (17:23).

The Holy Spirit is your best friend. His wise counsel is always for your good and its always the best. Though you may not understand sometimes, believe and put your hope in Him!
