Love Covers

The writer of Proverbs says, "Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all transgressions" (Prov. 10:12, NSAB). It covers in the way that it does not broadcast nor stirs up the failures and sins of others.

In Genesis 9:20-27, Noah blessed his sons, Japheth and Shem, but Noah cursed his grandson, Canaan the son of Ham. Why did Noah cursed his own grandson? Noah was drunk and had laid naked inside his tent (9:21). Ham saw his naked father and told his two brothers (9:22).

When Japheth and Shem learned that their father was naked, they took a garment, laid it upon their shoulders, walked backward and covered the nakedness of Noah. Their faces were turned away so that they did not have to look at their father's nakedness (9:23).

In the Bible, nakedness is associated with shame. The son of Ham, Canaan, is cursed because Ham uncovered Noah's nakedness, exposing him to shame. Not only did he look at the nakedness of Noah, he invited his brothers to do the same also. But Japheth and Shem ended up blessed because they covered Noah and prevented their father from being brought to shame.

God did something similar to Shem and Japheth in the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve ate the apple from the tree, they "knew they were naked" (3:7). To cover their shame and nakedness, God made garments of skin to clothe them (3:21). This is how love acts regarding the failures and sins of others. Love does not broadcast nor take delight in the failure and sins of others.

Love allows someone to forgive, without feeling the need to look at the nakedness of the fallen one. Love does not rejoice in rehearsing the past sins of others. Love never keeps account of what others do wrong. Love refuses to look back at what people were in the past, but rather it chooses to look forward to what God can do out of the worst of us. Love does not take revenge,

When you are a loving, spirit led Christian, you will always seek to give and bless others, even those who hate you and speak evil of you.

In the Bible, Jesus did not command us to love others more than ourselves, but as we love ourselves? I choose what I like to eat in a restaurant. I wear clothes that are comfortable. I avoid things that are troublesome and those that cause pain. I know all the bad things about myself, my failures and my sins. God has already forgiven and forgotten them and I do not tell them to people. Why? That is because I love myself. And that is how Jesus wants me to love you and you to love me.
