Evening : 1 Chronicles 15-16

Church Worship

The tabernacle is a picture of the church. Let us look at how David established the tabernacle, and how God desires for us to come into His presence in a church worship or meeting.

(1) David prepared a place for the ark (1 Chr. 15:11). We too, need to prepare our hearts to worship God. The ark of God, Jesus Christ, now dwells in our hearts.

(2) David pitched a tent. The tent represented the house of God. Though the presence of God is everywhere, but God chooses to make His power and glory known in His house, which is the church.

(3) The Levites shouldered the ark (1 Chr. 15:2). In the Bible, shouldering means taking responsibility. As christians, we need to learn to bear the responsibility of carrying the presence of God in our daily lives. More often than not, we leave this to the "professional" preachers and pastors to carry for us.

In the new covenant, we are Livites called into a "royal priesthood" (1 Pet. 2:9). We need to experience God ourselves, not just having head knowledge of who He is. We need to learn how to be led by the Holy Spirit and stay in the presence of God at all times.

(4) The people gathered together (1 Chr. 15:3). The Bible says that the place of agreement is the place of power. When the body of Christ, the church members, come together in true unity and fellowship, God commands His blessing among them (Ps. 133).

(5) They sanctified themselves (1 Chr. 15:12). God will not trust His presence and glory to those who live their lives in sin. We ought to sanctify ourselves and not to wait for an "easy" cleansing from God. We should aim to live a holy life, for without holiness, no one can see God.

(6) They worshipped God in proper order (15:13). There is also a need for order in worship. We need to obey God both in our preparation and approach to His presence. Out of our obedience comes confidence and security in the presence of God.

(7) Singers and musicians were appointed (15:16). Levites who were skilled were placed in their positions. Worship leading is a serious ministry and it is not meant for anyone who just wants to "give it a shot" at the musical instruments.

(8) David the king was willing to be a priest (15:27). David was already the king of the land of Judah, and was going to be crowned as the king of all Israel. However, in the presence of God, he humbled himself and took on the role of a priest.

You may be a very successful person in the world or in society, but when you come into the presence of God, you must be willing to humble yourself, put down all your achievements and titles, and be like David, to minister to the Lord humbly.
